Auralite 23 comes from only one place in Canada - Thunder Bay, deep in the Boreal Forests of Ontario. Its unusual geology created a melting pot of minerals that have formed together in this special environment. Auralite 23 is said to be made up primarily of Amethyst and at least 8 of 23 minerals (hence the 23 in the name) contained within the matrix. This means that each specimen is as unique as a fingerprint with its individual mix of minerals. The 23 minerals were claimed to be identified by X-Ray diffraction and they are Titanite, Cacoxenite, Lepidocrocite, Ajoite, Hematite, Magnetite, Pyrite, Goethite, Pyrolusite, Gold, Silver, Platinum, Nickel, Copper, Iron, Limonite, Sphalerite, Covellite, Chalcopyrite, Gialite, Epidote, Bornite, and Rutile.

Auralite 23 is a rare and somewhat elusive new-age crystal. Auralite 23 is generally expensive and for a good cut slice expect to pay in the hundreds of euros or dollars. A sliced “K9 tooth” shape of Auralite 23 makes for excellent wands for healing work and they sell very well in a retail setting. Look for pieces with strong colour and good zoning (clear bands of colour).
During your sourcing adventures for Auralite 23 you will likely come across Red Cap Amethyst. It can be hard to distinguish between Red Cap Amethyst and Auralite 23 which often contains many of the same minerals. Always check with the seller if it has come specifically from Thunder Bay in Canada, if it doesn’t then it can’t officially be called Auralite 23. Red Cap Amethyst also comes from Canada which is why you need to ask about Thunder Bay, but you can also find amazing specimens of Red Cap Amethyst from Madagascar, India, Namibia, and Brazil. It is worth noting that Auralite 23 is a trade name or marketing name for this type of Amethyst coming specifically from Thunder Bay. For many, it is classed as a new-age mineral and is not recognised by mineralogists as a separate species, just an impure Amethyst. There is a lot of discussion about the validity of the minerals it is said to contain.

Any type of Auralite 23 generally sells well in spiritual shops as a new-age crystal, but the small tooth shapes (raw or lightly polished) seem to be the most popular. Always check for chips and damage. When you are buying from your wholesaler or source, double-check that it is from Thunder Bay in Canada and not from another location otherwise you shouldn’t label it as Auralite 23. You may need to do your homework on this one though, there is a lot of debate about the minerals that are claimed to be included in this crystal and it will be up to you under what terms you choose to retail it.
