Flower Agate is a form of Chalcedony which in turn is a cryptocrystalline Quartz. This means the Quartz crystals in its matrix are so small you can’t distinguish them with a normal microscope. It is a blend of pink and grey Chalcedony with plumes of white Quartz creating its distinctive “flowers.” Some examples have a turquoise green tint to them which comes from Nickel deposits. There is disagreement on the source of the green colour with some indicating that it comes from Chlorite, but Chlorite produces in general a more dark forest green colour, I’m in the Nickel camp. Any orange or yellow inclusions in the Flower Agate come from either Iron or Manganese. Most Flower Agate on the market comes from Madagascar (often via carving centres in China).

Buyer’s Guide to Flower Agate
Private Buyers
If you are buying Flower Agate look for a good colour (nice soft pink and white - unless, of course, you are shopping for green), good patternation (pretty flower shapes), and a good polish (it’s chalcedony so you should be able to get a nice soft, high shine finish). If you are lucky you will spot one with a vug filled with druzy Quartz crystals.
Flower Agate works well as a palm stone for meditation, but for a cabinet or shelf, a sphere or a tower showcases its unique patternation and colour. You can buy raw but it's seriously less impressive. As always, check any piece for damage!
Retail Buyers
If you are buying Flower Agate for a retail store avoid the very small Flower Agate tumbles - you can’t see the pattern and most of the time they are low-grade and look a bit cheap. Aim for dollar coin size tumbles at a minimum, but palm stones work best for a cost-effective product. Towers and spheres also sell well BUT the colour and patternation must be on point or you will be stuck with them. If you are selling online make sure you are very clear if the crystal they will receive is not the one in the photos, people get very fixated on a certain one.
Flower Agate always sold very well in-store and online so it is worth carrying. Generally the more pink the better but grey also sells well if it’s combined with some pink. You can get some very good value grey/pink Flower Agate towers from wholesalers in China (via Instagram). Green is a more niche market (again mostly from the wholesalers in China) but it always does well on an Instagram Live sale. If you are buying from an Insta wholesaler remember to pay with PayPal so if there are any issues you can get your money back. Always get sellers to check for damage, get tower points protected for shipping, and make sure that the cut on the base is straight so you don’t end up stuck with any leaning towers.
