Ocean Jasper is a marketing name for a type of Orbicular Jasper that comes from the Mahajanga Province on the northeastern coast of Madagascar. As a form of Jasper it is mainly Chalcedony (cryptocrystalline Quartz) but with a mix of other impurities that dictate its colors. These impurities build up in a radial formation around a nucleus to form orbicular structures - this gives Ocean Jasper its over name - Orbicular Jasper. Orbicular Jasper is found in many places around the world, but Ocean Jasper refers to the Madagascan variety. It can have a wide range of colour combinations ranging from green, cream, white, orange, blue, yellow, brown, pink, red, all the way to purple.
‘Ocean Jasper’ from Madagascar, however, it is lacking the orbicular pattern, so maybe it’s just pretty Jasper, not Ocean.

Note of caution. The EU is reviewing the mining practices in Madagascar due to suspected worker exploitation, and child labour in the crystal mining industry in this country. So if you are trying to buy ethically, you may wish to avoid this crystal for now.
Private Buyers
Ocean Jasper looks best in larger formats. Think palm stones, spheres, or towers, something where you can appreciate its orbicular pattern. Many Jaspers on the market claim to be Ocean Jasper, but unless they have that particular orbicular pattern, they are not generally considered Ocean Jasper. So look out for the spots!
Ocean Jasper comes in a large variety of colours. The most commonly associated colour combo with this crystal is a dark-green base with cream, white and yellow spherical spots. With this crystal - just choose a colour that you vibe with. If you are lucky, you will spot a piece with a druzy-filled vug (pocket).
Retail Buyers
Ocean Jasper can be a bit hit-and-miss for a retail buyer. If you can only choose a ‘job-lot’ or a bag, then the quality and colour mix can be very diverse. You will notice over time that your customers prefer certain colour combos of this crystal. If you sell via a webshop, separating the colours into a few groups is best to avoid customer disappointment. If they fell in love with the pink one in the main picture and ended up with a brown one, you will get complaints and less return business. When buying wholesale, always check that it has the orbicular structures that make it Ocean Jasper and look for a good, glossy finish to the polishing. I would start with palm stones and small spheres as they tend to be large enough to display the pattern but without a high retail price. If you have a high-end crystal store, then XL spheres, towers, and freeform carvings of this material can be stunning.
